Website Care and Hosting: Kept Secure, Current and Working

A law firm website needs looking after: security updates, backups, form checks, new profiles and the occasional correction when a rule or a fee changes. Our care plan covers that work for a fixed monthly fee, so nobody in the firm has to remember it.

What the care plan covers

  • Hosting. Australian or nearby data centres where available, HTTPS certificates renewed automatically, and the server configured for the security headers modern browsers expect.
  • Updates. Software and component updates applied and tested, so the site does not break or drift out of support.
  • Backups. Daily backups kept off the main server, with a restore test each quarter.
  • Uptime monitoring. An alert if the site goes down, and someone who acts on it.
  • Form checks. A test enquiry sent each month to confirm messages still arrive.
  • Content changes. A set amount of editing time each month for new profiles, practice area updates, news posts or fee changes.
  • Yearly review. Accessibility spot checks against WCAG 2.2 Level AA [1], a read of every page for out-of-date claims, and a Core Web Vitals check [2].

Why forms deserve a monthly test

A contact form that stops sending is an easy failure to miss. Email providers change their rules, a password expires or a mailbox fills up, and nobody may notice until a client mentions they wrote weeks ago. A scheduled test enquiry catches that.

Keeping claims current

Websites go out of date in ways that matter for a law firm. A lawyer's accreditation lapses but the profile still shows it. A fee changes but an old page still quotes the previous figure. A practice area is wound down but still appears in the menu. Each of these can leave a statement on the site that is no longer accurate, and Rule 36 requires that advertising not be false or misleading [3].

The yearly review reads every page with that in mind, and accreditation fields in our profile template carry an expiry date so the care plan can flag renewals. The Law Society of NSW notes that only accredited specialists who have renewed annually can promote themselves as accredited specialists [4].

Privacy and security housekeeping

  • Contact form submissions are not stored on the web server unless the firm asks for an archive
  • Administrator accounts are reviewed and former staff removed
  • Two-factor sign-in is used for anyone who can edit the site
  • If a security incident happens, we tell you promptly and help you work out whether the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme applies

APP 11 requires an entity to take reasonable steps to protect the personal information it holds [5]. A maintained site with tested backups and current software is part of that.

What a typical month involves

In a normal month the work is quiet and routine: updates are applied and checked, backups run every night, the monthly test enquiry goes through, and any changes the firm has asked for are made and confirmed by email. If a lawyer joins, their profile is added from the firm's notes and photograph. If an accreditation is due for renewal within the next month, the firm gets a reminder so the profile can be checked once the renewal is confirmed. A short note at the end of each month lists what was done.

Hosting a site we did not build

We can take over care of an existing site after a short review. If the site runs on software that is out of support or cannot be updated safely, we will say so and recommend options before taking it on.

Leaving

Your domain, content and site files belong to the firm. If you move to another provider, we hand over everything they need, including backups and access details, without exit fees.

Questions people ask

Can we host the site ourselves and just use you for changes?

Yes. We can work on a site hosted anywhere, as long as we have the access needed to make and test changes.

What happens if we need more editing time than the plan includes?

We tell you before going over, and extra time is billed at the rate set out in your agreement.

Do you look after email as well?

We recommend leaving email with a dedicated provider such as your existing email host, and we look after the website only. We can help configure the records that let the contact form send email reliably.
